Kitten season is here in Jacksonville

Late summer in Jacksonville is still kitten season. Cats can have more than one litter a year, and our warm weather keeps the cycle going. Unspayed moms, outdoor life, and a few busy months can turn into a city full of tiny paws.

If you find kittens, pause before you scoop them up.

A healthy, warm litter tucked somewhere quiet often still has a mom. She may be hunting. Watch from a distance if you can. If they are cold, skinny, crying for a long time, or clearly alone, then they need people.

Do not give cow's milk. Kittens need warmth first, then the right formula, then a plan. A well meant rescue that skips those steps can make a fragile baby sicker.

The kindest long term help is fewer surprise litters.

Spay and neuter, and TNR for outdoor cats who will not be house pets, cut the next wave down. One unspayed cat and her kittens can fill a neighborhood faster than a small shelter can empty it.

We want to help. Right now we cannot take new litters.

We have the house, the spare room, and the will. What we do not have yet is the money for a rush of tiny mouths: food or formula, vet visits, vaccines, and spay or neuter. Until that changes, we are not able to take new kittens in. We are a small shelter, not an emergency intake, and saying no is how we keep the kitties already here safe.

If you can send a little love, it goes toward being ready the next time we see babies on the street. Even a small gift helps with food, vet care, and the basics that let us say yes.

If you have found a litter today, please call a larger Jacksonville rescue or the city shelter. If a kitty is hurt, go to a 24 hour emergency hospital. You can find public hospitals on our About page.

We will take in more babies when we can actually pay for their care. Until then, thank you for looking out for the little ones around you.
